Many employers are starting to receive notices from their health insurance company about MLR premium rebates that will be issued in August. Sounds good, right? It is, but there are some strings attached. Policyholders (usually the employer) must use the rebates for the “benefit of enrollees.”

Once again Florida makes the Insurance Journal Weekly Top 10 and again it is related to PIP insurance. PIP (personal injury protection) is the coverage that pays for the first $10,000 in bodily injury from an auto accident. It has been the subject of staged accidents and inflated medical treatment to the point that the Florida legislature recently passed a reform bill.
The #10 story this week is “Florida Arrests 15 in Alleged Food Truck Insurance Scam.” Even though this report is about a South Florida case, we are seeing staged accidents throughout the state. Be sure to report any insurance claims that you think may be fraudulent to the Florida Department of Financial Services. Fraud Hotline 1-800-378-0445.
